Anyone outside this job pictures a wedding videographer worrying only about light and framing. That's only half the film — the other half you hear. For years, on top of everything a videographer must track during a wedding day — the changing light, following the couple without being noticed, the "I do" that never happens twice — there was another thing weighing on me, one of the most stressful: audio levels.
The Problem with "Normal" Audio
A wedding never has just one sound source: the priest's soft voice echoing in a stone church, the DJ's speakers blasting at cake-cutting, the best man shouting a toast too close to a handheld mic. With traditional digital audio you have to set the recording level before the sound arrives: too low, and you're left with a noise floor no edit ever removes; too high, and the sound clips — distorted permanently, with no way back. There's no "let's do that again": the vows are said once.
For years, while trying to stay invisible and discreet — the philosophy I describe on my About page — part of my attention stayed glued to a mixer, a pair of headphones, a needle that couldn't cross into the red. Mental energy stolen from the story.
What 32-Bit Float Actually Means
32-bit float audio solves the problem at the source, by changing how sound is captured. Instead of a fixed ceiling beyond which the signal distorts forever, float recording works with an enormous safety margin — dozens of decibels of headroom above and below the recorded level. In practice: even if a peak looks "clipped" on screen, in the edit that sound can be brought back to a clean, correct volume, with no added noise and no distortion. The level stops being a split-second decision made with bated breath during the ceremony, and becomes a creative choice made calmly, in the studio, weeks later.
What Changes for Me
No more eyes on a mixer, no more last-minute gain rides while the organ plays. I get to stay what I want to be in front of you: a present but invisible guest, watching the light, the expressions, the moment — not a level meter. There's an added benefit, almost like insurance: if an audio source has an unexpected problem — a mic too close to a speaker, a toast shouted louder than expected — the 32-bit float margin is what saves the take.
This Year's Investment
Every year I put a serious share of what I earn back into gear — it's how I guarantee every couple the same standard, wedding after wedding.
